The basic task of the Coking Plant is to produce blast furnace coke of adequate quality to supply the blast furnaces. The plant has been producing coke from metallurgical coals purchased exclusively from abroad since 1993. Coal charge is composed based on the quality of coals, and then broken by the fine breaker to the adequate grain size. Coking coal charge is forwarded by conveyors to the coal tower, and it is charged from the tower into the coking chambers by charging car.

Coking Battery 1 operating since 1956 has 55 chambers, with the volume of 20 m3 each, and in 1986 Coking Battery 3 was started  with 65 chambers, with the capacity of 41.6 m3 each. Both batteries have already been fully reconstructed. Purified coke oven gas is combusted to ensure adequate temperature in the coking battery during coking time. Heating walls of coking chambers are kept at the temperature of 1150-1350°C. Coal charge fuses in the space closed from air as an effect of heating, and then it concretes to coke with the volatile matters exhausting. Then the gleed is pushed from the chambers into the coke-quenching car, as well as into the container.

The coke produced by Coking Battery 1 is cooled down by water spray, then it is forwarded to the Coke Screening Plant 1. The coke produced by Coking Battery 3 is cooled by inactive gas to 100-150°C in the dry quencher, and then it is forwarded to the Coke Screening Plant 2.

Following separation into fractions the dry quenched blast furnace coke of good quality is mainly used within the company group, it is forwarded by conveyor from Coke Screening Plant 2 to the Blast Furnaces. Separated fine coke of various fractions are stored in bunkers and then sold within and outside the company group.

The crude coke oven gas produced during coking is purified, a part of it is used for heating coking batteries, and the remaining quantity is used by the plants of ISD DUNAFERR Company Group. Coal tar and coke oven benzole, by-products of coke oven gas purification, are sold.

Total coking capacity of the Coking Plant is 900,000 tons/year.
