Coking Battery No. 3 is working with its full capacity
(March 17, 2006)

Dunaferr’s Coking Battery No. 3 is working with its full capacity again. By the implementation of the whole investment the 65 chambers of Coking Battery No. 3 which were reconstructed in two phases provides the production of 830-850 thousand tons of dry quenched coke annually. The amount produced by this way can cover the total furnace-coke supply of DUNAFERR Zrt.’s blast furnaces. By this Dunaferr made great strides towards coke production providing a long term condition of integrated steel production. The total amount of coke that can be produced in Coking Batteries No. 1 and 3 may exceed 1 million tons according to the total capacity before 2000.

Reconstruction works of Dunaferr’s Coking Battery No. 3 started in 2002. First a decision was made to reconstruct the battery part being in worse condition – 33 chambers. The investment amounting totally to HUF 3.6 billion finished in May, 2003. Even in that September an agreement was concluded about the reconstruction of the battery part containing 32 chambers. As the first step of the works of the second phase the battery part was stopped, the disassembly of the refractory walls and the mechanical equipments were carried out and in order to protect the state of the remaining parts a covered store was built. Following these the adequate renovation of the regenerator zone was carried out in several phases.
Following the closing of Dunaferr’s privatization process reconstruction works speeded up and in January, 2005 a main contractor’s contract for finishing the reconstruction was concluded between DUNAFERR and the Ukrainian Azovimpex Ltd. belonging to the interests of the Industrial Union of Donbass. Refractory walls as well as the mechanical equipments of the Coking Battery were renovated, while in the implementation of other works in connection with reconstruction (e.g. renovation of furnace machines, logistic tasks) have been carried out by companies belonging to Dunaferr Company Group and other Hungarian ventures – mainly from Dunaújváros.
As an important step of the reconstruction works drying and heating of the walls of the reconstructed battery part started last December. Besides these works mechanical assembly is continuing and due to preliminary assumptions the running up of the total capacity may be carried out in March, 2006.

Reconstruction of the battery part renovated in the second phase and the mutual cost of the related tasks was approximately HUF 4.1 billion, so the total investment at the coking battery amounts to some HUF 7.7 billion together with the battery part renovated in 2003.
